Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ultrasound scan?
An ultrasound scan is a form of radiology imaging that uses high frequency sound waves to produce an image of the human body. Ultrasound examination gives us information about the structure and motion of the body. It’s also useful for blood flow imaging.
How is ultrasound different from X ray?
X rays are part of the electromagnetic spectrum referred to as ionising radiation which can potentially cause changes to the cell, the ultrasound waves used in medical imaging are safe for children and adults as well as the unborn fetus.
Which part of the body can be examined with ultrasound?

Ultrasound examination can be performed on almost all parts of the body and most commonly on abdomen, pelvic structures, the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, spleen and all blood vessels. Ultrasound scans are useful for examining the bladder, uterus and ovaries in females and to examine the prostate and testes in males.

Are ultrasound scans safe for children?
Ultrasound scans are the safest imaging modalities for children and can be used to examine all parts of the child's body including the brain.
Are ultrasound scans safe for the pregnant ladies?
Ultrasound is the safest during pregnancy and are the best imaging modalities for following the growth and development of the fetus. It’s the best imaging modality to evaluate the placenta and the fluid around the baby.
Can ultrasound help to detect breast disease?
Ultrasound is the first imaging modality option when evaluating breasts especially for those less than 40 years old. Ultrasound can provide important information about any lump or change in the breast. It’s also very useful in aiding in the biopsy procedures.
What is the difference between ultrasound and mammography?
Ultrasound uses sound waves to evaluate the soft tissue of the breasts. However it doesn’t give us information related to microcalcification which is best evaluated with mammography.
When is the best time to perform a pregnancy ultrasound?

Since ultrasound examination is a safe imaging modality during pregnancy and it can be performed at anytime during the pregnancy.

Usually there are four important ultrasound scans that a pregnant woman is advised to perform during her entire pregnancy:

  • First scan is between 7 to 9 weeks to make sure that the there is a normal intrauterine gestational sac and that one can see and hear the fetal heartbeat
  • Second scan is around the 11th to 13th week gestation. This is to evaluate the first trimester markers including the nuchal thickness and nasal bone.
  • Third & most important scan is around 20th to 22nd week, and is commonly referred to as the anomaly scan where a detailed assessment of the fetus is conducted to make sure the normal development.
  • Fourth scan is around 28th to 32nd week, and is usually done to monitor the fetal wellbeing and to make sure everything is normal before the delivery.
How does one prepare for an ultrasound scan?
There is no special preparation for most of the ultrasound scans except in some examinations, namely the liver and Gallbladder. Patients are advised to fast for 6 hours, while for bladder and kidney examinations patients should have a full bladder.
What are the latest advancements in ultrasound scans?

Some of the latest ultrasound developments are 3D and 4D reconstruction of the fetus as well as other body parts.

The incorporation of Artificial intelligence (AI) and computer aided diagnosis with ultrasound is another advancement, aiming at enhancing the accuracy of the diagnosis especially in blood vessels & blood flow examinations . Other new advances are in liver assessment for fatty change to monitor any sign of liver cirrhosis.

What are the kinds of ultrasound examinations one can perform on children?
Ultrasound is the best imaging modality for examining fetuses, newborns and children. It can be used to image almost any part of the child's body including the bones and brain. The ultrasound set up provides a dynamic, interactive and safe environment for both the child as well as the parents.
